The Cause

Our annual League City Rotary Adult Team Spelling Bee raises funds to support projects benefiting the local community. One of Rotary's goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy.

Rotary Interntaional reports, "More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That’s 17 percent of the world’s adult population."

In 1985, Rotary International acknowledged literacy not only as a pressing concern, but also as a pre-condition for attaining peace in the world. Since chartering in 1980,  the League City Rotary Club has promoted literacy. League City Rotarains helped start the Readers Make Leaders program in League City elementary schools, provided new books for students in local elementary schools and have supported other local literacy initiatives.
